WINDER - Faced with two fatal crashes since the weekend, Barrow County law enforcement reminded drivers Tuesday that seat belts save lives.
A 22-year-old Winder man died in the predawn hours Tuesday, marking the area's second fatal crash in three days. James Justin Davis died about 4:30 a.m. when the bronze, 2002 Buick Regal he was a passenger in crashed on Carl-Cedar Hill Road near Pierce Road, officials said. Davis died at the scene of the single-car wreck. Authorities don't believe he was wearing a seat belt, said Barrow County Sheriff's Office spokesman Maj. Todd Druse. The driver and a second passenger were transported to area hospitals. Their names and conditions were not available Tuesday, Druse said. The incident followed another single-vehicle crash early Sunday that claimed the life of Michael Bernard Smith, 37, of Statham. Smith was driving a 1989 Cadillac westbound on Ga. Highway 82 when he lost control and struck several trees. No other serious injuries were reported. Smith's passenger, who fled on foot, was arrested on outstanding Barrow County warrants, officials said. The Georgia State Patrol is investigating both crashes to determine exact causes.More like this story
