SUWANEE - The City of Suwanee is taking applications and gearing up for its annual Farmer's Market, to be held from May 2 through Oct. 17 at Town Center Park.
The market will be open every Saturday from 8 a.m. until noon with the exception of Sept. 19, when the city celebrates Suwanee Day.
The Farmer's Market began in 2003 with a couple of purposes in mind, city spokeswoman Lynne DeWilde said.
"We thought it would be something our citizens would appreciate and enjoy," DeWilde said. "The purpose is kind of twofold: We feel citizens enjoy being able to get fresh produce and it provides an avenue for local farmers feeling the pinch these days - some have been feeling the pinch for years - to sell their product."
You can find goods ranging from plants and herbs to free-range eggs, meat and baked goods to seasonal fruits and vegetables including potatoes, berries, tomatoes, squash and beans.
Participating farmers are required to grow their own produce and be licensed and certified by the Georgia Department of Agriculture. Advance registration is also required. Guidelines and applications are available online at www.suwanee.com.
