Republicans pushing state tax credits

ATLANTA - House Republicans are backing an economic package aimed at encouraging Georgia businesses to begin hiring again.

The measures would create a $500 credit toward the unemployment insurance tax and a $2,400 income tax credit to a company for each new employee it hires.

It also would create a one-year 'new business tax holiday' that eliminates the $100 state filing fee.

Atlanta TV personality battles cancer

ATLANTA - Atlanta television personality Clark Howard has revealed that he has been diagnosed with prostate cancer.

Howard is a consumer adviser for WSB-TV Channel 2. The station on Wednesday said doctors first noticed that there might be a problem after a blood test during a routine exam two years ago. Since then, Howard's doctors have kept an eye on it.

Howard was diagnosed earlier this month. He said it is in its early stages and is treatable.

Ga. Power to secure covers of manholes

SAVANNAH - Georgia Power plans to install safety clamps on manhole covers in downtown Savannah after two underground explosions in the past six months sent some of the hefty covers flying into the air.

Georgia Power spokeswoman Swann Seiler said Wednesday the clamps allow manhole covers to pop up a few inches to release pressure from expanding gases, but restrain the covers from becoming airborne.
