Collins Hill sends 13 wrestlers to state finals

KINGSLAND - Collins Hill put itself in good position to defend its traditional state championship with its showing Saturday at the Class AAAAA East Sectional.

The Eagles advanced 13 wrestlers, including seven sectional champions, from the sectional at Camden County.

The Eagles got tournament championships from Bazell Partridge (103 pounds), T.J. Mitchell (119), Allen Willard (135), Joel Smith (140), Gary Tiller (152), Taylor Knapp (160) and C.J. Collins (215).

"We did a little better than I could have hoped for," Collins Hill coach Cliff Ramos said.

Tiller beat North Gwinnett freshman Carl Rider in the sectional finals. The Collins Hill senior had to forfeit to Rider last week at the Area 7-AAAAA tournament due to a shoulder injury.

"I'm happy for Gary," Ramos said. "It looks like he's overcome his latest injury."

Caleb Sawchuk took second place, John Allgood, Sam Hoppenbrouwer and Nick Holbert were third, Thomas DeLain was fifth and Mac Bennett was seventh.

The top eight wrestlers from each weight class advance to the state tournament this week at the Arena at Gwinnett Center. The top eight from the East Sectional will be paired up with the top eight from the West Sectional.

Parkview had nine wrestlers place in the top eight. Alex Hillis (135) lost to two-time state champion Joey Lazor from Union Grove and Matt Elakatt (285) lost to Union Grove's Wesley Mena. Robbie Kane (112) was third and Matt Johnson (215) bounced back after suffering his first loss of the season in the semis to take third. Jesse Forte (160) placed fourth.

Peachtree Ridge had seven wrestlers advance, led by 189-pound champion Sam Kuntz. The senior beat Grayson's Paul Ardilla in the finals.

Ardilla was one of six Grayson wrestlers to qualify for the state tournament. Nick Isburgh won the 112-pound weight class and Jack Dunster claimed the 145-pound title.

Dacula got third-place finishes from Brandon Bullock (103) and Noah Hunt (119).

Central Gwinnett's Jacob Aiken-Phillips placed fourth at 285 pounds.

Buford, GAC advance eight to finals

At the Class AA East Sectional at Jefferson, Buford had five wrestlers advance to state and GAC had three. Scottie Forrester and Nick Voss placed second and Billy Anderton was fourth. Chris Boulware and Cameron Hutchins were eighth.

GAC's Locke Hoover was fifth, Travis Elrod was seventh and Jared Hemmings was eighth.

Wesleyan wins area title

Wesleyan won the Area 2-A championship, beating out Commerce by half a point at Social Circle.

The Wolves qualified eight for the state tournament, including five area champions. Josh Holman (140), Colin Genthert (160), Michael Douglas (171), Cole Watson (189) and Andrew Uria (215) claimed area titles. Brooks Spraetz (112), Zack Rindik (119) and Tyler Hediger (135) placed second.

The Class A area and sectional tournaments were combined and the top eight from each weight class will advance to state.
