Engel called up to AHL

DULUTH - Gwinnett Gladiators' rookie defenseman Josh Engel was called up by the Toronto Marlies of the AHL on Monday.

It's the Wisconsin native's second trip to the American League after a four-game stint with Providence in December.

In 36 games this season with Gwinnett, Engel ranks second among defensemen in scoring with 14 points. He has two goals, both on the power play, and a plus-4 rating.

The Gladiators played their last game, a home win over Charlotte on Saturday, with five defensemen because of an injury to Scott Marchesi. But head coach Jeff Pyle said he thought Marchesi would be able to play today when Gwinnett travels to Mississippi, keeping the blueline corps at a sufficient five.

The Gladiators (20-20-5) are only three points ahead of Mississippi and three points behind third-place Charlotte in the ECHL South Division standings.
