Planners table decision on stadium development

LAWRENCEVILLE - Planning commissioners only entertained two cases at Tuesday's public hearing, but one of those cases concerned a potentially very large development project.

In the first matter of the evening, attorney Lee Tucker, representing Brand Properties made the case for a 73-acre, mixed-use overlay district to be created surrounding the new Gwinnett Braves stadium.

"It's a live-work-play, entertainment type of center that will surround the stadium and be integrated into the activities in the stadium," Tucker told commissioners. "It's an exciting project and a great thing for Gwinnett County."

The proposed plan calls for 351,000 square feet of commercial space, 617,000 square feet of office space, 610 residential units and 300 hotel rooms to come in the form of two, five-story buildings. Tucker said his client was in discussions with Hyatt for the hotel operations and said the facility would be similar to Buford Village, another mixed-use facility that was also conceptualized by Brand Properties.

Commissioners tabled the case until Feb. 17 because District 4's Paula Hastings said there were "some concerns," but she added that she was "very excited" about the proposed development.

"We just have to get it right," Hastings said.

No opposition to the project was present.

In other business, commissioners unanimously approved a special-use permit and change-in-conditions request to allow automobile service and metal risers be present at a property located in Mechanicsville on Buford Highway.
