Snellville home destroyed in morning fire

SNELLVILLE -- An early morning fire destroyed a two-story home in the 4600 block of Riveredge Cove on Saturday morning.

According to reports, a neighbor called 911 just before 3 a.m. reporting heavy smoke from the residence.

Gwinnett fire spokesman Capt. Thomas Rutledge said no one was inside the house when the fire broke out, but that residents returned home as firefighters were battling the blaze.

Due to intense fire conditions, Rutledge said, firefighters "operated in defensive mode," flowing water from several hoses and an aerial ladder pipe.

The Red Cross was called in to assist the displaced occupants, four adults and three children.

No one was injured in the fire, Rutledge said, but one man was taken to the hospital after experiencing an unrelated medical condition.

The cause of the fire is undetermined and under investigation, Rutledge said.
