ATLANTA -- Georgia's two U.S. senators blasted a Christmas Eve vote for a landmark health care bill backed by Democratic President Barack Obama.
U.S. Sens. Saxby Chambliss and Johnny Isakson -- both Republicans -- said they believe the legislation will raise taxes, boost insurance premiums, slash benefits for seniors and place a massive unfunded mandate on the states.
Isakson called the bill's expansion of Medicaid "a recipe for disaster" that could bankrupt cash-strapped states.
Chambliss said the bill will drive the already-strained budgets of individuals, families and small businesses "to the breaking point."
The Senate approved the health care reform legislation 60-39 early Thursday. No Republicans backed the measure.
