Ringing in 2010 in Gwinnett

Gwinnett will usher in the start of the new year with fireworks and champagne toasts on Thursday at midnight. Following a year in which the nation's economy has entered the very early stages of a fragile recovery, residents might just need a chance to celebrate, whether in a theater filled with mostly strangers or at home in the company of loved ones.

As the beginning of a new year is often accompanied by resolutions, maybe this year we should make a single vow: to simply worry less. And to reflect on, for at least 30 seconds each day, the things we do have, whether it's good health, loving family and friends, or the hope of tomorrow being a better and brighter day.

Finnish writer Kersti Bergroth summed it up quite well: "It is difficult not to believe that the next year will be better than the old one! And this illusion is not wrong. Future is always good, no matter what happens. It will always give us what we need and what we want in secret. It will always bless us with right gifts. Thus in a deeper sense our belief in the New Year cannot deceive us."
