Gwinnett Daily Post
It's not unusual to find a representative from Buford among the superlatives in Class AA in Georgia Sports Writers Association's All-State high school football teams each season.
However, this year's Wolves superlatives -- Class AA Defensive Player of the Year Jessel Curry and Class AA Coach of the Year Jess Simpson -- may be among the more satisfying to the program.
Those two joined two other Buford players and 19 other players from eight different schools in three different classifications to be honored by the state's sports writers with the release of its All-State teams today.
This particular honor came with Buford winning its third straight Class AA state championship -- and sixth of the decade -- with a 13-10 win over previously top-ranked Calhoun on Dec. 11 at the Georgia Dome.
And it came with a team that, while not devoid of stars, did not have the same dominating presence as past Buford title teams.
The Wolves (14-1) overcame the loss of its 32-game overall winning streak and 49-game region winning streak in an early-season setback to Lovett, plus a strong group of contenders like Jefferson, Fitzgerald and Calhoun to take home the school's seventh overall state title.
"This was one of our better coaching jobs," Simpson said. "My staff and our seniors did as good a job of piecing together (a team) as we've ever done."
Curry, one of the Wolves' 16 seniors, was perhaps the important piece in keeping the team together throughout the season.
The 6-foot-2, 217-pounder, who recently graduated from Buford and will enroll at Auburn for the winter semester, filled a variety of roles.
On offense, he led the team with 709 yards and 17 touchdowns on 112 carries, and finished third on the team with 18 pass receptions for 284 yards and a team-high 7 TDs, including a 5-yard scoring catch in the title game against Calhoun.
He also averaged a solid 35.3 yards on 36 punts, including pinning opponents inside their own 20-yard line 13 times.
But it is defensively where Curry stood out the most, finishing second on the team with 118 tackles, including six for losses and a sack, and added a team-high five interceptions, two forced fumbles -- including one in the title game -- and two fumble recoveries.
Curry was out of town this week and could not be reached for comment, but Simpson couldn't think of a better choice for the classification's Defensive Player of the Year.
"Jessel -- the way he played for us this year and all the things he did -- was amazing," Simpson said. "He just played great the whole season, and he did it a lot of different ways."
Joining Curry on the AA first-team were a pair of Buford teammates also headed to SEC programs next fall in offensive linemen Kolton Houston (committed to Georgia) and Du'Von Millsap (South Carolina).
A total of 12 players from Gwinnett were included on either the first-team or honorable mention in Class AAAAA.
Grayson, which was ranked No. 1 much of the year in the classification and eventually finished at No. 5, had the largest contingent with four players, all on the first team -- running back Ean Pemberton, defensive lineman Shawn Green, linebacker Terry Williams and defensive back Kori Gaines.
Other county representatives on the Class AAAAA first team included North Gwinnett offensive lineman Ja'Wuan James and Peachtree Ridge receiver/defensive back Brad Roby.
Norcross punter Connor Hawk, Chris Caspari and Charles Perkins of Collins Hill, Geremy Davis of Norcross, Jonathan Krause of South Gwinnett, Austin Shepherd and C.J. Uzomah of North Gwinnett and Andre Sims of Brookwood were honorable mention selections.
In Class A, Wesleyan had four honorees, led by the classification's Defensive Player of the Year Bobby Fulton.
The 6-1, 205-pound senior linebacker recorded 130 tackles, including four for losses, with an interception, one forced fumble and two fumble recoveries as the Wolves (12-1) advanced to the Class A state quarterfinals.
Other Wolves honored by the AP were running back Kyle Karempelis on the first team and quarterback Conor Welton and linebacker Merritt Hall as honorable mention selections.
Apalachee had three members of its historic 12-1 team honored in Class AAAA, including first-team offensive lineman Shaun Hill and honorable mention running back Jon Lee and linebacker Jeff Haney, while Winder-Barrow receiver Trent Demeritte was also an honorable mention selection.
