Taylor leads Gladiators to shutout win

WHEELING, W.Va. — Danny Taylor put up a strong performance for the Gwinnett Gladiators as he stopped all 40 Wheeling Nailers shots, earning the shutout and the 3-0 victory.

Drew Paris found Michael Forney coming out of the box while on the power play and Forney scored his first pro goal to give the Gladiators the win.

The Gladiators (12-7-2-1) and Nailers (11-12-1-1) skated to a scoreless tie after the first period. Taylor stopped 13 shots in the period, including two rebound saves on a big scramble in front of the net during one of the two power play chances the Nailers had during the first period. The Gladiators were able to muster six shots on goal during the period and went 0-1 on the power play.

The second period had much of the same action seen during the first period, the only difference being a few more penalties. The Gladiators were whistled four times during the second period, while the Nailers found themselves taking two penalties of their own. Taylor and Wheeling's goaltender Brad Thiessen each made 11 saves during the second period.

The Gladiators finally broke the scoreless tie 6:40 into the third period. Forney came out of the box after 4-on-4 action to give the Gladiators a brief power play and Paris found him on the breakaway and Forney was able to tuck his shot home on the forehand.

It was the only goal scored against a goalie in the game. Tom Zanoski raced for a loose puck, while Nailers goalie Thiessen was pulled for the extra attacker, and Zanoski buried the puck in the empty net giving the Gladiators a 2-0 lead.

Sam Roberts added a final goal while shorthanded as he hit the empty net from center ice, scoring before the final horn went off at the WesBanco Arena.
