LAWRENCEVILLE -- With the frost on the windows, some seniors need help to keep themselves warm inside.

For the second year, Gwinnett County Senior Services and the county fire department are working together on Project AWARE (Added Warmth Assistance for Residences of our Elderly), collecting electric portable heaters.

"I'm really glad this service is available. It has helped us out a lot," said Irene Madden, of Snellville, who was thankful to receive a heater.

New portable electric heaters can be dropped off at any Gwinnett County fire station. The heaters will be personally distributed to seniors in need, along with a smoke detector and information on fire safety, a press release said.

"There are seniors that are dealing with so many issues, especially finances. Project AWARE is helping to keep our seniors warm without hurting their wallets," said Adrienne Noble, Gwinnett Senior Services information and referral specialist.
