Aspiring principals complete training

SUWANEE -- The third cohort of Gwinnett County Public Schools' training program for aspiring principals graduated this week.

The Quality-Plus Leader Academy's class of 2009 contained 31 administrators, 12 of whom currently serve as school principals.

Susan Bearse said the skills she learned and the knowledge she gained in the academy helped her navigate her first year as principal at Cedar Hill Elementary.

"The Quality-Plus Leader Academy set me up to be an effective principal," she said.

The program contains seven curriculum strands and engages participants in several performance-based team activities, said Glenn Pethel, the school system's executive director of leadership development.

Jennifer Fero, an assistant principal at Meadowcreek High, said the school system's investment in these leaders will reap rewards.

"Many mistakes (will be) avoided because of our on-the-job training before we are on the job," she said.

Chandra Young, an assistant principal at Stripling Elementary, said the academy helped define her as a leader.

"I feel well equipped to lead a school that fosters the academic success of every child," she said.
