Petals Bakery and Cafe in Suwanee serves up its mini cherry pie, signature chicken salad sandwich on a croissant, broccoli and cheese soup and a cupcake.
Open since: Early November
Location: Petal's Bakery Cafe is off Lawrenceville-Suwanee Road in Suwanee. The largest retailer in the same shopping center as Petal's Bakery Cafe is Office Depot. Driving toward the Office Depot, Petal's will be on your left tucked into a row of shops.
Hours: 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday
Owner: Lawrenceville resident Eve Henry started baking custom cakes for her children's teachers. After regular requests for her cake-baking services started coming in, she started Petal's Bakery out of her home in 2002. As her business grew, Henry realized she needed a storefront and opened Petal's Bakery Cafe in November.
Atmosphere: Step into Petal's Bakery Cafe and you will find yourself surrounded by bright pastels green, pink, purple, yellow and orange. Walk between combination booth/regular table seats to the left and right along a brightly tiled floor toward the counter, where you can place your order. The broken tile might be slightly reminiscent of the yellow brick road in "The Wizard of Oz" with the addition of orange, square tiles decorated flowers.
Menu: While the baked goods that fill a large display case at the order counter and other, smaller cases are the highlight of a visit to Petal's Bakery Cafe, salads, soups and sandwiches round out the menu.
The most popular lunch item is Petal's signature chicken salad, which is served on a croissant and dressed with lettuce, tomato and onion.
Petal's soup selections change daily and typically include two creamy selections and one brothy. Recent soups of the day include broccoli and cheese and southwestern vegetable.
Petal's Bakery Cafe also offers specialty salads. Turn the regular tossed salad chilled romaine, cucumbers, tomatoes and cheese into a Greek, Italian, cobb, Caesar, chicken or tuna salad.
Beverage selections include tea, peach tea, lemonade, coffee and water.
Homemade brownies (chocolate, chocolate chip and cheesecake varieties), freshly baked cookies (chocolate chip, oatmeal raisin, white chocolate macadamia nut and peanut butter) and cupcakes (chocolate, vanilla, Boston cream pie, chocolate peanut butter, red velvet and carrot) are just a few of the dessert options. Petal's also specializes in mini pies, 3-inch and 6-inch, which are available in a variety of flavors, and assorted pastries, petit fours and cakes.
Things you might not know: The name Petal's Bakery Cafe is taken from the nickname "Petal" used by Henry's children for their grandmother, and Henry's mother, Jan Pennington.
