School boards association honors Daily Post

LAWRENCEVILLE -- The Georgia School Boards Association recently honored the Gwinnett Daily Post for the newspaper's support of public education.

On Friday, the Daily Post received the GSBA Beacon Award, which is given annually to media organizations or individual reporters or editors who have gone above and beyond the call of duty to report educational issues to their communities, according to a news release.

Gwinnett County Public Schools nominated the Daily Post for its fair and accurate news coverage about programs, policies and issues affecting Gwinnett schools, according to the nomination form. The school district also lauded the newspaper's distribution of Kidsville News, a family friendly newspaper that targets a student audience.

"Over the past year, Gwinnett County's news coverage has changed dramatically as the Atlanta Journal-Constitution has cut its staff and coverage of our county. As a result, the Gwinnett Daily Post has become an even more integral player in terms of delivering the news to county residents," the nomination form states. "As such, the paper is to be commended for dedicating a reporter to the education beat. This is the statement to the paper's recognition of public education as a key to Gwinnett County's success -- today and into the future.

"In addition, the paper's Kidsville News initiative underlines the commitment to not just reporting about education, but also providing resources to help extend learning for students. It speaks to the newspaper's commitment to the entire Gwinnett community."
