LAWRENCEVILLE -- A 53-year-old Lawrenceville man was killed Thursday night while trying to walk across New Hope Road, police said.
Police identified the victim as John Bond. He was struck by a westbound 1988 Oldsmobile Delta 88 when he steeped into traffic near Bernice Drive in unincorporated Lawrenceville, police said.
Bond died at the scene. The vehicle's driver was not injured and is not expected to face charges.
Gwinnett police spokesman Cpl. David Schiralli said Bond was attempting to cross a poorly lit section of the road with no designated crosswalk.
"The driver of the Oldsmobile attempted to steer his vehicle to avoid hitting the male but was unsuccessful," Schiralli said.
Members of the department's accident investigation unit are continuing to look into the incident, Schiralli said.
