Denny Allen Liegerot, Sr.

Denny Allen Liegerot, Sr. 75 died Monday November 30 at Duke University Hospital following a hard fought battle with Leukemia. Denny was born in Miami Florida August 18, 1934. He attended the University of Florida and the University of Miami. He was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity. Denny's lifelong desire to become a Marine Aviator became a reality when he entered the Marine Aviation Cadet flight training program February 1958. He was commissioned a 2nd Lt. in the USMC and received his Naval Aviator Wings August 5, 1958. He served as a Primary Flight Instructor on the T-34 in Pensacola before joining Marine Attack Squadron VMA 223 based out of El Toro, CA where he flew the FJ-4B "Fury". Following active duty he was attached to Marine Reserve fighter squadron VMF 351 based at NAS Atlanta flying the F-8 Crusader, known as last of the Gunfighters. He flew in the Active Reserve until 1966, and spent 8 years on inactive reserve. He retired in 1974 with the rank of Major. Denny's interest in aviation never wavered. He was hired by Delta Air Lines in 1962 and flew Captain for most of his 32 years with them. He served a term as Chairman of the Gwinnett County Airport Authority. Denny and his wife Tine were an active part of the Gwinnett Community for over 20 years, living in Lawrenceville from 1973- 1985 before moving to Duluth in 1985 where they lived until Denny retired in 1994. The Liegerot's moved to Brevard, NC in 1995. Denny enjoyed playing 1st division amateur soccer, running, competing in off road motorcycle races, and hiking, but above all else he cherished his family. As a fellow Marine Corps and Delta Airline friend remarked. "Denny was a fine Marine, a terrific pilot, and a wonderful leader of men". He is survived by his mother Frances Allen Liegerot of Brevard, his wife of 51 years, Florentine "Tine" Phillips Liegerot, son Denny Allen Liegerot Jr. of Brevard, and son Charles Fletcher Liegerot and wife Joanne Moskow Liegerot of Brooklyn, NY, two grandsons, Mitchell Allen Liegerot, Victor NY, Miles Fletcher Liegerot, Brooklyn, NY and granddaughter Lark Gisele Liegerot of Brooklyn and a brother Richard Jackman Liegerot and his wife Alice Lewter Liegerot of Atlanta. The family will receive visitors at Moore Funeral Home in Brevard Monday evening December 7 from 6- 8 pm. A funeral Mass will be held Tuesday December 8 at 10:00 am at the Basilica of St. Lawrence Roman Catholic Church located at 97 Haywood Street in Asheville. A Bereavement Reception will follow in Laurentine Hall at the Basilica. Interment will be at the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery, Black Mtn., NC at 2:00 pm. In lieu of flowers friends are encouraged to make donations to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society to aid in the research for a cure for Leukemia.
