SNELLVILLE -- Two South Gwinnett High School students are behind bars on felony charges this week for reportedly carrying knives at school.
Both students were caught carrying similar weapons -- "tactical lock-blade knives" -- in separate incidents, according to arrest warrants. Both remained at the Gwinnett County Jail on Wednesday, jail records show.
The suspects -- junior Jared Kozma, 18, and sophomore Brandon Pollard, 18 -- are charged with carrying a weapon within a school safety zone.
Gwinnett Public Schools spokesman Jorge Quintana said a school administrator was tipped off that Pollard was carrying a weapon on Oct. 29, and later found the knife in his possession. He was arrested three days later, Quintana said.
A Snellville police officer spotted Kozma off school grounds carrying the weapon Tuesday and returned him to school, Quintana said.
"The investigation revealed the student had carried the knife with him on campus earlier that morning," Quintana said.
A rule in the student conduct behavior code specifically prohibits weapons of any kind on property belonging to Gwinnett schools, Quintana said.
In addition to legal repercussions, both students will face school disciplinary action. Long-term suspension and expulsion are possibilities, Quintana said.
When students are found to be carrying weapons on school campuses, the punishment "depends on the severity of the incident and their record," Quintana said.
