Collier brings his stand-up close to where it began

Reno Collier got his start in stand-up comedy at a venue about 20 miles from the Red Clay Theatre.

The 38-year-old was tending bar at Atlanta's Punchline Comedy Club to supplement his day job when he found himself front and center on stage during an open mic night.

Since that fateful occasion, Collier has performed sold-out shows in comedy clubs and on college campuses and toured with the older generation of blue collar comics Jeff Foxworthy, Bill Engvall and Ron White.

This weekend, the Nashville, Tenn., resident and host of NBC's "The Great American Road Trip" will perform four stand-up shows at Red Clay, along with Dale Jones of NBC's "Last Comic Standing."

"I'm just really excited to come back to Atlanta," said Collier, who was likely last seen in the state's capital city when he toured with Larry the Cable Guy in 2007.

The former P.E. teacher said nothing in his life is off limits in his stand-up routine, not even family.

"I make fun of everything that I've ever done," Collier said. "(And) my family is a mess. It's huge. Everybody in my family has a giant, Scottish head."

Although Collier said he keeps his routine fairly clean, only those 17 and older will be admitted to the shows at Red Clay, which begin at 7:30 and 9:30 p.m. both Friday and Saturday nights. Admission is $20.
