DACULA - Gwinnett County police have identified two men related by marriage that were involved in a Friday night domestic dispute that left one man dead.
Lawrenceville resident Mora Oliver, 44, died instantly after being shot by his son-in-law, Duluth resident Danilo Arevalo, 21.
According to police, preliminary investigations revealed that both were riding in a van on Jones Phillips Road when a dispute arose. It was at that time that police believe Oliver pulled a handgun on his son-in-law and tried to shoot him. A fight then ensued over the gun and somehow Arevalo obtained possession of it. That led him to leave the van the two were traveling in.
But police say Oliver tried to follow Arevalo in order to continue the fight. That's when Arevalo shot Oliver, apparently in an effort to defend himself.
Police spokesman Cpl. David Schiralli that's when Arevalo immediately called 911.
"At this time all evidence points to the suspect's (Arevalo) story being true," Schiralli said in a statement. "He has not been charged at this point."
Schiralli said the incident remains an active investigation.
