G-Braves fall in series finale to Tides

The Norfolk Tides defeated the Gwinnett Braves 3-2 on Friday night at Harbor Park in Norfolk, Va. With the win, the Tides (66-59) gained a split in the four-game series The G-Braves (73-54) remain three games ahead of the Durham Bulls in the International League South Division standings. The Bulls lost their Friday night game at Charlotte.

Gwinnett starter Jonny Venters allowed just three earned runs in five innings, but was charged with his sixth loss of the season. He is now 3-6 with a 5.67 ERA. Vladimir Nunez and Luis Valdez kept the G-Braves close with three scoreless innings of relief.

The G-Braves got within 90 feet of tying the game in the top of the ninth, but failed to get any closer. Diory Hernandez led off the frame with a double and advanced to third on a groundout, but was stranded when Alberto Castillo struck out Antonio Perez to earn his 13th save of the season.

Norfolk starter David Pauley held the G-Braves to just one run in six innings to earn his ninth win of the season. Pauley is now 9-10 with a 4.37 ERA.

Hernandez and Chris Burke each had two hits in the loss. Barbaro Canizares and Brandon Jones each drove in a run, while Gregor Blanco scored both runs in the series finale.

Justin Turner led the Tides with a 3-for-4 night at the plate. Turner, Rhyne Hughes and Guillermo Rodriguez all recorded RBIs in the win.

The Gwinnett Braves return home today for a four-game series against the Charlotte Knights (Chicago White Sox). The first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m.

Rehab showdown: It looks real that Sunday's 2 p.m. game will pit rehab starts for Atlanta Braves RHP Tim Hudson against White Sox RHP Jake Peavy. Hudson (0-0, 2.84 in three starts with Gwinnett) is returning from offseason shoulder surgery and Peavy is on the disabled list with a strained tendon in his right ankle.

Double dip: For the first time this season, the Gwinnett Braves will host a doubleheader Monday. The two seven-inning games will begin at 6 p.m. There are only four home games left in the regular season at Gwinnett Stadium. No G-Braves game has been rained out or postponed this season.

Knights update: Former Atlanta Braves INF Justin Lillibridge was recalled to the White Sox earlier this month after a stint with the Class AAA Knights. ... The SS Lillibridge was replaced by the trade for Columbus Clippers SS Andy Cannizaro. In the seven games since the trade, Cannizaro is hitting .125. ...The Knights are 8-11 in the month of August.
