Cops: Man molested sisters for 10 years

LAWRENCEVILLE - A Lawrenceville man is being held without bond, accused of molesting two family members for nearly a decade.

Robert Wayne Cates, 57, is charged with multiple counts of sexual battery, aggravated sexual battery and aggravated child molestation in several alleged incidents at Cates' High Sierra Court home.

According to police, Cates would fondle the victims - now around 13 and 19 years old - when they would spend the night with him. They told police it happened late at night and that another family member in the house never knew what was going on. One victim said Cates also attempted to rape her in 2002, but she said "no" and pushed him away.

In 2007, the girl said, she confronted Cates after seeing him touching her sister. The younger sister told police she never told anyone about the abuse because she didn't want to see anything bad happen, reports said.

According to warrants, the first incident happened in 1998 or 1999, the last between 2006 and 2007.

Police said they were first made aware of the alleged abuse in April, when the girls' father showed up at headquarters saying that his daughters said Cates had molested them.

Gwinnett County police conducted the initial investigation and warrants were issued Monday. Deputies with the Gwinnett County Sheriff's Department's fugitive unit arrested Cates at his home Wednesday.

Records show Cates is employed by the Gwinnett County Public School system as a night custodian at Parkview High School.

Spokeswoman Sloan Roach said Cates has been at Parkview since 2008 and employed by the school system since 1987. Because of his date of hire, Roach was unsure if Cates underwent a background check before being hired. In 2006, she said, the school system began a five-year process of looking into the backgrounds of those hired before criminal history checks were commonplace.

Gwinnett police records show Cates has no prior arrests.
