Conrad slam leads G-Braves by Tides

NORFOLK, Va. - The Gwinnett Braves walloped the Norfolk Tides 11-3 on Thursday night at Harbor Park for their 10th win in the last 11 games.

The G-Braves (73-53) retain the top spot in the International League South Division standings, still three games ahead of the Durham Bulls, who were also victorious Thursday.

Gwinnett got five RBIs from Brooks Conrad. His team-leading 12th home run of the season, a grand slam in the fifth inning, immediately distanced the G-Braves from the Tides.

It was just the second grand slam of the season for Gwinnett, following Reid Gorecki's on June 30 in the eighth inning of a 8-7 win against Louisville. Conrad finished the night 3-for-5, one of four G-Braves with multiple hits.

Alvin Colina and Brian Barton each had two hits in the win, while Diory Hernandez recorded a three-hit game.

Barton got Gwinnett on the board first in the second inning with an RBI double and later added a pair of insurance runs with a two-run homer in the sixth inning. It was Barton's seventh home run of the season.

Not to be lost in the offensive slugfest was Gwinnett starter Todd Redmond's successful outing. Redmond, who hasn't lost since June 19 allowed just four hits and made just one mistake in six strong innings.

He allowed a two-run home run to Norfolk's Jeff Fiorentino in the third inning, but picked up his fourth win in his last five games.

Gwinnett will send left-hander Jonny Venters (3-5, 5.68 ERA) to the mound in the series finale. Norfolk is expected to start right-hander David Pauley (8-10, 4.50 ERA). First pitch today is set for 7:15 p.m.
