Gwinnett Daily Post
NORFOLK, Va. - The Norfolk Tides defeated the Gwinnett Braves 5-2 on Wednesday night at Harbor Park but kept a three-game lead over Durham in the International League South Division standings. The Bulls dropped their Wednesday night game 8-1 to the Charlotte Knights.
After the G-Braves (72-53) scored a run in the top of the fifth inning, Norfolk struck back with five runs in the bottom of the frame. Gwinnett scored first when Brandon Jones, who led off the fifth inning with a double to right field, scored on a Diory Hernandez single to left. But the Tides quickly loaded the bases on a walk and two bunt singles in the bottom half of the fifth. With one out, Joey Gathright cleared the bases with a triple. Gathright was then plated on Justin Turner's double. And Brandon Snyder capped the five-run inning with an RBI single to left field. G-Braves' starter John Halama was charged with his fifth loss of the season after allowing all five of the Tides' runs in 62/3 innings on the mound. Halama is now 4-5 with a 4.56 ERA in 13 games with Gwinnett. Tides' starter Jake Arrieta held Gwinnett to one run in seven strong innings. Arrieta improves to 4-5 with a 4.28 ERA in 14 starts with Norfolk. Tides' reliever Bob McCrory retired the G-Braves in order in the ninth for his fifth save of the season. Gregor Blanco and Brooks Conrad each had a pair of hits in the loss. Barbaro Canizares and Diory Hernandez drove home the only Gwinnett runs. Gwinnett will send right-hander Todd Redmond (8-6, 4.07 ERA) to the mound today for game three in the four-game set at Norfolk. The Tides will counter with RHP Andy Mitchell (9-4, 5.07 ERA).More like this story
