Bess McMillian McGarity, age 83 of Lawrenceville, passed away Tuesday, August 18, 2009. Funeral Services are planned for Friday, August 21, 2009, at 11:00 am in the chapel of Tim Stewart Funeral Home, Lawrenceville, with Dr. Lamar Holley officiating. Burial will follow in Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Dacula. Mrs. McGarity was preceded in death by her husband, Bob McGarity; mother, Cammie Holt McMillian; brother, Fred McMillian; and sisters, Laurie Greeson and Jean Ezzard. She is survived by sons, Ralph (Elizabeth) McElhanon and Steve (Kathy) McElhanon both of Lawrenceville, and daughter Sue (Charley) Houck of Brunswick, GA. Mrs. McGarity leaves one sister, Ann (Conrad) Huff of Lawrenceville, sisters-in-law, Doris McElhannon and Johnnie Summers of Winder, and first cousin, Doris Lewis of Peachtree City, GA. Five grandchildren, two great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, and many wonderful friends also mourn her loss. Bess was a native Gwinnett Countian, born and reared in Dacula. She was an accomplished seamstress, and her flair for fashion and design was widely known and admired. She loved beautiful clothes and hats – children often called her “the hat lady” because no outfit was complete without the right hat. She married Bob McGarity of Lawrenceville in 1987 and they enjoyed 20 years of happiness until his death in 2007. She was a resident of Sunrise at Web Gin until her most-recent illness. Bess loved her family and friends, especially Alice Hinton and “Jessie's girls” (daughters' of her beloved friend, Jessie Justice, now deceased): Violet, Barbara, Vera, and Joann.
