5 schools top Georgia ACT scores

LAWRENCEVILLE - Five Gwinnett County high schools were among the highest performing in the state on the ACT, a college readiness exam.

Parkview High, North Gwinnett High, Brookwood High, Norcross High and Collins Hill High were among a group of 26 schools with average composite ACT scores of at least 23. With an average score of 24, Parkview ranked highest in the county, according to information released Wednesday by the Georgia Department of Education.

Overall, Gwinnett ranked among the top seven school districts in the state, with an average composite score of 22.1. The school systems in Cobb and Dodge counties also had an average score of 22.1, while Fulton's score was 22.2. Districts in Fayette and Oconee counties had an average score of 22.5, and Forsyth County led the state with an average score of 23.1, on a scale of 1 to 36.

With an average score of 21.5, Buford also made the list of top performing districts.

"When you get behind the numbers, you can see that Georgia students are actually outperforming their peers from across the nation," State Superintendent of Schools Kathy Cox said. "However, Georgia must remain focused and determined to provide all students with a high quality education so that we can close the achievement gap and prepare our students for the 21st century."

North Gwinnett High made the list of schools with the most improved ACT scores. Its average score of 23.9 was up 1.5 points from last year.

Barrow County's average composite score was 18.7.


The following list ranks the schools in Gwinnett, Buford and Barrow by their average composite ACT scores. The scores are on a scale of 1 to 36.
