LAWRENCEVILLE - A sex offender released from prison in 2008 after failing to register is behind bars again, this time for his Internet activity.
Thursday morning, Gwinnett County deputies arrested 33-year-old Douglas Elkins, charging him with failing to register as a sex offender and violating probation. Prison records show Elkins was convicted of child molestation in 2002. According to authorities, Elkins is a member of Plenty of Fish, an online dating site. While there is nothing illegal about that, officials said, Elkins failed to provide all of his e-mail addresses and Internet passwords to law enforcement as required by law. Officials said Elkins also sent sexually explicit photos of himself to at least one woman, who does not live in Gwinnett. Whether criminal charges arise from that act is up to authorities in that jurisdiction, said sheriff's department spokeswoman Stacey Bourbonnais. "We are concerned that there may be other sites he has been on and other possible victims that he sent these type of photos to," Bourbonnais said. "If we learn of anyone residing in Gwinnett County, we will look at pressing charges of distributing obscene material if the adult person receiving them did not request them." Bourbonnais said the department is asking anyone who may have received these types of pictures from Elkins to call the Sex Offender Unit at 770-619-6808.More like this story
