LAWRENCEVILLE - The Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia approved another expansion of academic programs at Georgia Gwinnett College, giving students at the new school more choices as they pursue their postsecondary education.
During its meeting Wednesday, the board approved the addition of programs in early childhood education, special education, exercise science and political science, according to a news release. In June, the Regents gave their approval for Georgia Gwinnett College to offer majors in English, history and mathematics. All of the new programs must now be sanctioned by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
"We have seen a significant increase in our student enrollment," GGC President Daniel J. Kaufman said after the board's vote. "When we opened the doors to the college in 2006 - just three short years ago - we had 118 students. This morning when I left the college, we had nearly 2,600. It is imperative to our students and the community that we increase our offerings as we continue to grow at this rapid pace."
Currently, the Lawrenceville college offers degrees in biology, business administration, information technology and psychology. Existing concentrations within the degree programs include biochemistry, finance, marketing, software development, business information technology and clinical/personality and social/applied psychology.
With the addition of the new majors, the college plans to offer more than 30 concentrations, including teaching certification in biology, English, history and mathematics.
"Our growth has been considerable over the past few years, and we are working diligently to keep up with the demands of that growth," GGC Vice President of Academic and Student Affairs Stas Preczewski said. "We have made great strides in our goal to meet the needs of our students and potential students, as well as the needs of the community. These new majors are in fields that our students are interested in pursuing and in fields where jobs are plentiful."
Preczewski also noted the college is looking at adding criminal justice/criminology and nursing to its programs soon.
Georgia Gwinnett College received its initial accreditation from the SACS Commission on Colleges in June.
