BUFORD - The Rotary Club of Buford/North Gwinnett has scheduled a 5K race and fun run to raise money to fight polio.
The 2009 Pound Out Polio race begins at 8 a.m. Aug. 22 at 1 E. Main St. in historic downtown Buford. The entry fee is $20 for individuals and $45 for families for those who register in advance or $25 per person on race day.
Funds raised will be used for local and international community service projects, including the PolioPlus initiative, which supports immunization campaigns in developing countries.
To register for the race, visit www.active.com or mail a check payable to Rotary Club of BNG to Duane Champlin, P.O. Box 490250, Lawrenceville, GA 30049-0250.
"We are trying to get the word out about what it means to be a Rotarian," said Champlin, the club's president. "Rotary has 1.2 million members worldwide and has contributed $1.9 billion towards humanitarian aid in the world since 1957. There is a lot to get excited about. But these projects have one thing in common - they require funds to make them successful."
Rotarians are business and professional leaders who take active roles in their communities. Internationally, the club, through the Rotary Foundation, supports the PolioPlus initiative; the Shelter Box program; water projects in Haiti, Africa and South America; wheelchair programs and more.
Locally, the Buford/North Gwinnett club has supported Gwinnett's Great Day of Service, the Buford Senior Center, Toys for Tots, Gwinnett Children's Shelter, American Red Cross, United Way, Habitat for Humanity and Hurricane Katrina relief and provided scholarships for students at North Gwinnett High and Buford High.
The Rotary Club of Buford/North Gwinnett meets at noon every Wednesday for lunch. For more information about membership, call Champlin at 678-804-2511 or visit www.northgwinnettrotary.org.
