Jason Elam isn't the only member of the Atlanta Falcons who will be making a homecoming tonight when the team holds its Friday Night Lights scrimmage.
John Roveto is also returning to Brookwood High School and, unlike the Atlanta kicker, he went there when Brookwood Community Stadium was the Broncos' home field.
Roveto, who graduated in 2002, is one of the Falcons' assistant equipment managers and he is even busier than the players this time of year.
"It's definitely exciting going back," Roveto said during a workout break at training camp in Flowery Branch. "It will be a long day, but I'm really looking forward to it."
Unlike Elam, Roveto won't be a target of autograph seekers. But he wouldn't have time to sign anyway.
After the Falcons' morning workout today at Flowery Branch, Roveto and the other members of the equipment staff will have to get everything packed up and down to Snellville by late afternoon.
That is just the start, though. Everything has to be then packed back up after the scrimmage and taken down to the Georgia Dome for another event in the Falcons' All-Access Weekend.
At least Roveto and his co-workers won't be in as much of a rush to get everything back to Flowery Branch afterward. The Falcons don't resume practice workouts until Monday, although there will plenty of work for the equipment staff to do the rest of the weekend.
Roveto got his start with the Falcons as a ball boy and moved up from there. The equipment staff, led by Brian Boigner, includes four full-timers and three interns. There are also four ball boys.
Roveto's duties include keeping up the uniforms and helmets, maintaining the team's equipment and sideline apparel, assisting in the transportation of equipment and uniforms, and working with the coaching staff to facilitate practice drills.
"It's a lot of work," said Roveto, who also served for four years as equipment manager of the Georgia Force in the Arena Football League.
"But if you love football, it's a great job to have."
