Attacker sought in Duluth rape

DULUTH - Police are searching for a man who brutally attacked a woman in her Duluth-area apartment last week, officials said Monday.

The 25-year-old victim answered a knock at her door in the Colonial Grand apartments off McDaniel Road on the afternoon of July 27, thinking it was maintenance arriving to service her air conditioning system, police said.

Instead, the man trailed her into another room, and when she turned to speak with him face-to-face, "he immediately attacked her, physically and sexually assaulting her," said Gwinnett police Cpl. David Schiralli.

The victim was injured but was not transported for medical treatment, police said.

Police described the suspect as a skinny black man, about 5 feet 6 inches tall and 135 pounds. He was clean-shaven and wore a white tank top and baggy blue jeans, Schiralli said. Police could not provide his approximate age.

The alleged attack appears to be an isolated incident.

"There hasn't been any other similar incidents in that area," said Gwinnett police spokeswoman Cpl. Illana Spellman. The investigation is ongoing, she said.

Police urge anyone with information to contact the Gwinnett police special victims unit at 770-513-5321 or Crime Stoppers at 404-577-TIPS. Tips could lead to a reward of up to $2,000.
