Sunni mosque bombed south of Baghdad

BAGHDAD - A bomb hidden inside a toilet struck a Sunni mosque south of Baghdad on Saturday, injuring two people, according to Iraqi police, the latest in a wave of attacks against Islamic sites of worship.

A series of bombings targeted Shiite mosques a day earlier during Friday prayers in Baghdad, killing at least 29 people.

U.S. officials have warned they expect insurgents to try to re-ignite retaliatory sectarian violence, which nearly pushed the country to the brink of civil two years ago. Violence has dropped sharply over the past two years following a U.S. troop surge in 2007, a Sunni revolt against al-Qaida in Iraq and a Shiite militia cease-fire.

Filipinos unify to honor former president

MANILA, Philippines - Thousands of Filipinos lined up in monsoon rains Saturday to pay their last respects to former President Corazon 'Cory' Aquino, putting aside deep divisions to honor the icon who ousted a dictator and sustained democracy against great odds.

Aquino's death at age 76 led Filipinos from all walks of life to reflect on the legacy of the accidental opposition leader - whose rise to prominence began only after the 1983 assassination of her politician husband, Benigno 'Ninoy' Aquino Jr.

'Unity is a rare thing in our country; we have it now, and adding to the feelings of grief is the wistful realization that it took the passing of Cory to reunite a divided nation,' the Philippine Daily Inquirer said in its Sunday editorial.

Brazil busts international prostitution ring

SAO PAULO - Brazilian police say they have busted a ring that allegedly sent some 200 women in the last year to the United States, Europe and elsewhere to work as prostitutes.

Leandro Daiello Coimbra of the federal police in Sao Paulo told state-run Agencia Brasil that nine Brazilians and one American were arrested in Brazil on Friday.

Two more Americans were detained in the United States. Coimbra gave no further details on the arrests.

Coimbra said most of the women were recruited through the Internet or Brazilian brothels and then sent to Las Vegas, the Dominican Republic and France.
