Everson declares candidacy for labor commissioner

SNELLVILLE - Republican State Rep. Melvin Everson announced his bid Wednesday to run for Georgia's labor commissioner.

It will be the first statewide candidacy for the man who made history in 2005 when he became the first black Republican to win a contested election to the State House of Representatives. Everson represents the 106th District in Gwinnett County.

He has since been re-elected twice by large margins.

"I am seeking the office of Georgia labor commissioner," Everson said in a released statement. "I will work hard to ensure this department is more efficient in helping Georgians."

Everson served 23 years in the military before retiring in 1999. He has a wife, Gerri, and one grown son, Ricardo.

Calls to Everson were not returned before press time.
