Rep. Everson to run for labor commissioner

SNELLVILLE - Republican State Rep. Melvin Everson today announced his bid to run for labor commissioner.

"I am seeking the office of Georgia Labor Commissioner," Everson said, "and I will work hard to ensure this department is more efficient in helping Georgians."

Everson made history in 2005 when he became the first black Republican to win a contested election to the State House of Representatives (District 106 in Gwinnett County). He was then re-elected twice by large margins.

Everson served 23 years in the military before retiring in 1999. Everson has a wife, Gerri, and one grown son, Ricardo.
