Gwinnett Daily Post
The first-round showdowns between Region 7-AAAAA and Region 8-AAAAA decided bragging rights, but only slightly.
The girls advantage went to 8-AAAAA, which won three of the four games against 7-AAAAA foes in the state playoff openers. The boys side was flipped, with 7-AAAAA teams taking three of four. But those intra-county matchups are forgotten as Gwinnett teams face more unfamiliar opponents in this week's second round. The top-ranked Parkview girls (18-1) host eighth-ranked Lassiter (12-3-1) tonight, while the other two 8-AAAAA girls teams that are tied for fifth in the state rankings face road tests. Brookwood (13-4) visits No. 4 Walton (13-4-1) and Grayson (13-2-2) travels to No. 2 Harrison (17-1-1). No. 3 North Gwinnett (15-1), the only 7-AAAAA girls team to make the second round, hosts unranked Alpharetta (12-5). In AA/A second-round games today, the No. 2 GAC girls (16-3) host No. 7 Blessed Trinity (12-3) and the No. 6 Wesleyan girls (15-4) play at Fellowship Christian (13-3). The boys AAAAA second-round games are Wednesday with No. 1 Collins Hill (15-3) hosting Lassiter, No. 3 Parkview (15-2-1) hosting No. 4 Walton and No. 6 Peachtree Ridge visiting No. 2 Centennial. The second-ranked GAC boys (16-2) host Pace Academy Wednesday in the AA/A playoffs.
