Prep roundup: Wolves advance with shutout

BLUE RIDGE - Goals from Meagan Hall and Kenzie Winn led the Wesleyan girls to a 2-0 road victory over Fannin County on Thursday in the first round of the Class A/AA state soccer playoffs.

Paige Pickert and Kaylie Love each picked up an assist as the Wolves (16-4) advanced to the second round against a yet-to-be determined opponent.

BASEBALL

Providence 12, Eagle's Landing Christian 5

LILBURN - Providence Christian had another big night at the plate and picked up a 12-5 region win over Eagle's Landing Christian on Thursday.

Christin Stewart was 4-for-4 with two home runs, a double, three runs scored and four RBIs to lead the Stars (15-6-1, 8-1). Chris Wages was 3-for-4 with three doubles, two runs and an RBI. Aaron Epp was also 3-for-4 with a solo homer and two runs.

Casey Gray got the win, giving up four runs on six hits, while striking out five and walking one in five innings pitched.

Wesleyan 14, Fellowship Christian 0

NORCROSS - Brooks Colquitt struck out 10 and allowed just one hit in Wesleyan's five-inning 14-0 victory over Fellowship Christian on Thursday.

Colquitt is 3-0 this season and the Wolves improved to 14-7 overall and 8-1 in the region.

The biggest hitters in a big hitting night were Conor Welton (three-run home run) and J.J. Russell (home run, three RBIs). They each finished 3-for-3 as Wesleyan collected 14 runs on 15 total hits.

Buford 13, Avondale 0

AVONDALE ESTATES - Dylan Stowe hit a grand slam and a two-run homer for Buford, leading the Wolves to a 13-0 shutout of Avondale on Thursday.

Jake Burnette got the win on the mound for Buford (8-12, 3-6 in 6-AA), giving up a lone hit to the game's leadoff hitter and then retiring 14 straight. Burnette struck out seven batters on the day.

Kyler Berrett, Eric Eck and Brian Clark also collected a pair of hits in the game. Berrett drove in three runs, while Eck and Clark drove in a run apiece.

Hebron Christian 13, Towns County 2

HIAWASSEE - Led by a superb effort from freshman Jordan Hillyer, Hebron Christian cruised to a 13-2 road win over Towns County on Thursday.

Hillyer was 2-for-3 with back-to-back solo home runs in the third and fourth innings. He finished with three RBIs.

Lance Dutton was 2-for-2 with two RBIs. Kyle Hayes was 2-for-3 with four runs scored and an RBI. Danny Lockhart was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI for the Lions (17-3, 10-3).

Getting the win was junior Ben Mason (3-0), who allowed just one earned run and struck out four in five innings pitched.

GIRLS TENNIS

Wesleyan 5, Athens Christian 0

NORCROSS - Wesleyan swept Athens Christian 5-0 in the first round of the Class A state playoffs Thursday.

Earning singles wins for the Wolves were Sally Robertson, Chelsea Michael and Megan Kelly. Doubles pairs of Brittany Price and Caroline Payne, and Catherine Sutcliff and Julie Rodriguez completed the sweep.

Wesleyan plays at home in the second round Tuesday against an undetermined opponent.

BOYS TENNIS

Parkview 3, Peachtree Ridge 2

LILBURN - With the four other matches decided and split, it came down to Parkview's Lance Mengel at No. 3 singles.

Mengel won and propelled the Panthers past Peachtree Ridge 3-2 in the first round of the Class AAAAA state playoffs Thursday.

Peachtree Ridge, which plays in stacked Region 7-AAAAA, won both doubles matches. But Parkview took all three singles matches, adding wins from Thomas Cook and Ethan Motz to Mengel's deciding victory.

Wesleyan 5, Athens Christian 0

NORCROSS - Wesleyan didn't give up a single point in a 5-0 win over Athens Christian in the first round of the Class A state playoffs Thursday.

Norman Chang, Robby Shackleford and Brooks Prettyman were singles winners. Erik Trum and David Rodriguez won at No. 1 doubles. Tyler Hediger and Ryan Jackson were also victorious at No. 2 doubles.

Wesleyan plays at home in the second round Tuesday against an undetermined opponent.

BOYS LACROSSE

Peachtree Ridge 8, Collins Hill 6

SUWANEE - Peachtree Ridge beat rival Collins Hill for the second time this season, winning 8-6 on Thursday.

The Lions (5-9) were led by their freshman goalie Greg Rose, who had six very key saves.

Scoring multiple goals for Peachtree Ridge were Chris Sawdey (two goals, one assist), Michael Ruffcorn (2) Tanner Botts (2). Nick Lombardo had a goal and four assists. Cory Hall had a goal and three assists. Tyler Botts and Brad Cooper each scored one goal.

J.J. Harry played stellar defense while having the tough task of guarding the Eagles' premier attackman Conner Squires. Spires still scored three goals and had three assists, but it wasn't enough to get past the Lions.

In goal for the Eagles was Alex Squires, who had a phenomenal game and a season-best 19 saves.

GIRLS GOLF

Hebron girls make state

RUTLEDGE - Hebron Christian's girls golf team placed second at Monday's Region 8-A Golf Tournament at Hard Labor Creek, earning the program's first trip to the state tournament. Darby Gentry shot 110 for the Lions and teammate Kline Couch shot 113.
