A second key player has transferred out of the Brookwood boys basketball program, this one giving rival Meadowcreek a major boost in the frontcourt as well as on the football field.

Lavon Hooks, a 6-foot-4, 245-pound junior, moved into the Meadowcreek district and enrolled Tuesday. He plans to play basketball and football for the Mustangs.

Brookwood finished second in the Region 8-AAAAA Tournament last season, but has lost two key basketball standouts to transfers in the last month. Leading scorer Chris Bolden, just a freshman, transferred to Norcross.

"I heard (Meadowcreek's) getting a new football coaching staff and I know they've got a good basketball team coming back," Hooks said. "I had been thinking about (transferring) since football season and when my (basketball) coach left (Broncos' coach Craig Witmer resigned), I thought about it more."

Hooks averaged 10.9 points and 7.9 rebounds last season for the Broncos, in addition to setting a school record for charges taken. He joins a Meadowcreek frontcourt that already returns 6-5 sophomore Dominique McKoy.

Although a standout basketball player, he hopes to play football in college and plans to play tight end and defensive end for the Mustangs. He was with Brookwood's football team for five games last season, then he said his father removed him from the team.

He knows it will be a big change going from a football power like Brookwood to a Meadowcreek team that hasn't won more than one game in a season since 2001.

"I like helping (Meadowcreek football) out," Hooks said. "It's a big change, but I don't mind."
