Charity sale to benefit schools, nonprofit organizations

LAWRENCEVILLE - An upcoming charity sale at Belk will benefit schools and nonprofit organizations throughout the company's 16-state market area.

The four-hour, in-store shopping event on May 2 provides a chance for customers to support charities and take advantage of special discounts on purchases made during the event. For a $5 donation, customers receive a ticket admitting them to the charity sale from 6 to

10 a.m. and entitling them to merchandise discounts ranging from 20 to 50 percent on purchases throughout the store, excluding cosmetics and fragrances.

Tickets may be purchased at Belk stores beginning Friday, with all donations divided among the participating charities and schools. Participating organizations will also sell tickets prior to the event, and the nonprofits will be able to keep the proceeds of the ticket sales.

Participating customers can register to win one of three $1,000 Belk shopping sprees, and all participating charities and schools will automatically be registered to win one of three $1,000 donations.

Belk's previous charity sale, held Nov. 15, raised more than $4.5 million for hundreds of participating nonprofit organizations.

Gwinnett Tech accepting ESL applications

DULUTH - Gwinnett Technical College is accepting applications until Monday for English as a Second Language (ESL) classes at the college's International Education Center at Gwinnett Place Mall.

Classes for this quarter began this week, but registration is accepted through the first week of the session.

Gwinnett Tech's ESL program offers a comprehensive curriculum with 16 levels of learning - from courses that teach the basics of English conversation, to intermediate and advanced courses that teach how to perfect and improve English speaking and comprehension. Day and evening courses are both available, all with two-day or four-day schedule options. Free tutoring and listening lab are also offered.

In addition to language and listening labs, the center includes on-site testing facilities to ensure that language students are placed in the best class for their needs.

Trickum 5K run to raise money for track

LILBURN - Trickum Middle School is hosting its first 5K Run/Walk at 2 p.m. Sunday to help fund construction of a paved track on the athletic field for student, faculty and community use.

Runners and walkers can register between 1 and 1:30 p.m. the day of the event. The registration fee is $25 for adults and $20 for children aged 14 and younger. T-shirts will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.

The family-friendly event is also open to well-mannered dogs.

Duluth High to hold lacrosse info session

DULUTH - Duluth High School will have an informational meeting at 7 p.m. Monday in its media center for parents of rising ninth- through 12th-graders interested in playing lacrosse next year.

The school will have lacrosse programs for girls and boys.
