Suwanee's Art on a Limb to feature magnet creations

SUWANEE - Beginning May 1, trails of the Suwanee Creek Greenway and Sims Lake Park will become a little more picturesque as pieces of artwork are added to the natural allure.

Suwanee's fifth annual Art on a Limb will feature art by Sugar Hill resident Melody Orr, collages fashioned as magnets that feature historic Suwanee photos with mixed-media elements within the frame. The elements are intended to make a statement about the collage or time period.

The pieces - 100 in all - contain a limited number of photos but no two magnets are identical.

"I came up with the idea when I was collecting family photos from my grandmother," Orr said. "My primary goal was to preserve our history but I fell in love with several photos and decided to make little keepsakes for them."

Two pieces of art will be placed on the trails every day in May and it's finders-keepers for those who come across them. Pieces will also be for sale at City Hall and at future events.

Orr also participated in the 2006 Art on a Limb, painting on small pieces of the old water tower. She said she is excited about being selected again and has never had a problem straying from the artistic norm.

She paints and creates sculptures with materials from torn paper to fabric and paper clay.

"I just love experimenting when I get tired of doing the same old thing," Orr said. "With this I am using different elements to make it more updated, interesting or whimsical."

Artist Ingrid Bolton painted gourds for the 2008 program.
