WINDER - Barrow County authorities identified the torched body of a murdered man found last November as 46-year-old Salvador Chavez of Gwinnett County.
Chavez, who lived in Norcross at the time of his death, was discovered by walkers in the woods behind an abandoned Atlanta Highway home near Statham a week before Thanksgiving.
A specialist with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation recently identified Chavez from fingerprint records, said Barrow County Sheriff's Office spokesman Investigator Matt Guthas.
An initial autopsy yielded evidence that Chavez had been shot to death, and police have said other clues at the scene suggested foul play.
"At this time, there have been no arrests," Guthas said. "The investigation is still active."
Police have not shed light on a motive for the killing. Guthas wouldn't say if the victim has kin living in the area.
Gwinnett police have no record of a missing person's report being filed for Chavez or any other record of his disappearance, said Cpl. Illana Spellman, the department's spokeswoman.
The Barrow County Sheriff's Office on Wednesday called for anyone who knew Chavez to come forward and speak with investigators, Guthas said.
Authorities urge anyone with information to call the Criminal Investigations Division at 770-307-3080, ext. 3083.
