Peanuts, Cracker Jacks among offerings at Gwinnett Stadium

LAWRENCEVILLE - The baseball tradition of peanuts and Cracker Jacks will cost you about $7 at Gwinnett's new minor league stadium.

But the staples of hot dogs, cotton candy and Coca-Cola are only a few of the options available at the many eateries in the facility.

With food "concept areas" spread throughout the park, vendor Aramark has prepared a menu ranging from a grill for hot dogs and hamburgers, a barbecue joint or a Mexican fiesta with burritos, quesadillas and churros.

Edy's Ice Cream will be served in a collector's Gwinnett Braves helmet for $6.25, and peanuts, hot dogs and beverages will be "hawked" along the aisles as you watch the game, Scott Willis of Aramark said.

A main feature of the stadium's sustenance is "Niekro's," a bar and grill named after Atlanta Braves Hall of Fame pitcher Phil Niekro. The retired knuckleballer, who lives along Lake Lanier, has agreed to come to the eatery for autograph signings, and he's even allowed his trademark to be made into a sandwich. The "Knucksie," a pulled pork open-faced sandwich on a slice of cornbread, topped with cole slaw and barbecue sauce and scallions, goes for $8.

In the "Catcher's Mitt," chicken tenders and onion petals are the order of the day, but people can also eat like they are at a carnival, noshing on treats like fried pickles, fried twinkies, fried oreos and funnel cake, ranging in price from $3 to $5.

"For our fans, we want everyone to try a little bit of everything," Willis said. "The concepts are foods people would eat out in a restaurant or families would make at home."

Willis said he expects to sell 5,000 hot dogs at a weekend game, with up to 1,000 bottles of water and 500 pretzels.

While there was a question for the past year about serving beer on Sundays at the stadium, officials have said permits are in place to serve the brew at each home game. On tap is Bud Light, Budweiser, Bud Select, Miller Lite, Ice House and Coors Light. Tomahawk Ale, which is brewed specially for the Braves organization, is available along side Sweetwater 420, Heineken, Shock Top, Yuengling and Land Shark, and about 15 types of beer are available in bottles.

The domestic beers go for $5 a piece, with the imports and hand-crafted beers selling for $6.50.
