LAWRENCEVILLE - Authorities believe a blast of lightning caused a fire that damaged a Lawrenceville home in the 2900 block of Matthew Lane.
A neighbor called 911 at 9:18 p.m. Friday after seeing a bright white and purple flash of lightning followed by a loud boom, Fire Department spokesman Capt. Thomas Rutledge said.
"The man stated that he knew lightning must have struck close by but didn't know exactly where," Rutledge said.
Firefighters contained the majority of the fire to the attic area of the two-story home. The owners were out of town at the time, Rutledge said.
The fire was under control by about 10 p.m., he said.
"Thunderstorms and numerous tornado warnings during the late evening hours kept Gwinnett firefighters busy throughout the county" on Friday, Rutledge said.
No injuries were reported.
