Local athletes honored by Sports Champions
Three high school seniors and one high school coach from Gwinnett will be honored April 16 at the Sports Champions of Greater Atlanta banquet at the Cobb Galleria. Georgia State football coach Bill Curry is the guest speaker. Peachtree Ridge's Tyler Droll and Buford's Cody Getz and Abby Johnson were selected for awards based on athletic excellence, academic achievement and good character in representing their schools. Greater Atlanta Christian boys basketball coach Eddie Martin also is one of four high school coaches who will receive awards. A total of 14 athletes from metro Atlanta were selected for the prestigious awards. For more information, visit www.sportschampionsatlanta.com. Atlanta Sports Hall of Fame announces fifth class The Atlanta Sports Hall of Fame has announced its fifth class to be inducted during a June 6 ceremony at the Emory Conference Center and Hotel. The inductees are Olympic medalist Edith McGuire Duvall, NBA great Walt "Clyde" Frazier, legendary Georgia Tech football coach John Heisman, high school coaching legend Calvin "Monk" Jones, two-time Georgia Tech All-American Roger Kaiser and longtime Atlanta Braves broadcasters Skip Caray and Pete Van Wieren.
