WINDER - Barrow's chief financial officer was suspended Monday, becoming the second department director to face disciplinary action in a month.
Beth Horacek, the county's director of finance, is accused of being untruthful with commissioners about budgeting issues, according to a memo from Chairman Danny Yearwood.
The memo states that Horacek is not being disciplined for failing to appropriately budget for an increase in insurance, and acknowledges that former Chief Administrator Keith Lee and Chairman Doug Garrison told her to not budget an increase.
Instead, she faces 40 hours of unpaid leave for "misrepresentations" to commissioners.
"Given the financial environment and the economic challenges facing this county, it is critical that the Board of Commissioners can trust and confidently rely upon your representations," Yearwood wrote in the memo. "You have breached that trust, and any future behavior of this sort will be grounds for additional disciplinary action, up to and including, termination."
Yearwood said the $400,000 insurance premiums increase was key information to the board.
"There's extenuating circumstances surrounding that," he said about the involvement in the past administration.
Horacek's salary and employment history were not immediately available Monday.
Yearwood accused Fire Chief Robert Post also of being untruthful, when he was suspended last month. Post resigned, serving his last day Friday.
