Phillips to coach Berkmar
Norcross assistant replaces McWhorter

As of Friday afternoon, Berkmar has a new boys basketball coach and the Phillips family has another head coach.

Norcross assistant coach Greg Phillips was named the head boys coach at Berkmar, replacing the departed Tommy McWhorter, who stepped down to spend more time with his family.

Phillips may now go head-to-head on occasion with his older brother Ty, Roswell's head coach.

"(Ty) was an assistant at Harrison when I was at Kennesaw Mountain and that was a huge rivalry," said Phillips, who met with his new Berkmar players briefly Friday afternoon before flying out of town for a vacation. "(A game with Roswell) is not on (Berkmar's) schedule yet, but in the next year or two it will be."

Phillips, a 1996 graduate of Lakeside-DeKalb, played college basketball at Oglethorpe. He helped start programs at Kennesaw Mountain and Alpharetta before joining Eddie Martin's Norcross staff in 2005.

The Blue Devils won three state titles at the varsity level while Phillips was an assistant, while his ninth-grade teams won region titles in 2007 and 2008. His junior varsity team was 18-0 last season for the first time in school history and also won the 7-AAAAA title.

The 31-year-old hopes to keep that success going at Berkmar, which won the 2007-08 region championship and went 23-6. The Patriots went 13-12 and missed the state tournament last season after losing in the first round of the region tournament.

Berkmar also won state titles in 2000 and 2001.

"I've had a lot of respect for what (Berkmar's) done this decade, with back-to-back state titles and two years ago winning the region title," Phillips said. "They've had a very successful program, and Coach McWhorter has done a good job."
