LAWRENCEVILLE - Gwinnett police and firefighters responded to an apparent domestic incident Friday morning to find a residence ablaze and two people inside the home shot.
At about 7:30 a.m. Gwinnett police responded to an "aggravated domestic" call in the 1700 block of Cagle Court, where they noticed heavy smoke and flames on the second floor. After notifying the Gwinnett County Fire Department, an officer noticed a man on the floor inside the home, reports said.
Gwinnett police spokeswoman Cpl. Illana Spellman said the officer made a forced entry and pulled the man - who apparently suffered a gunshot wound - outside. The officer heard a woman on the second floor, but was unable to go upstairs because of the smoke.
Moments later, fire crews arrived and removed the woman, who had also been shot.
Fire Department spokesman Capt. Thomas Rutledge said both subjects were taken by ambulance to Gwinnett Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.
Authorities are not releasing their names at this time, citing an ongoing investigation. Late Friday afternoon, the woman was in the Intensive Care Unit in critical but stable condition. The man was still in surgery.
"The exact circumstances and motive for this incident are unknown," Spellman said in a release. "Criminal and arson investigators will work together to determine if the fire was accidental or intentional in this shooting incident."
Rutledge said a Fire Department lieutenant was also taken to the hospital after experiencing "a medical emergency" while battling the blaze. Rutledge wouldn't comment on the nature of the emergency, but said, "He is still hospitalized and is doing fine. It appears that he is going to be OK."
