Collins Hill girls, Parkview boys defend county titles

HOSCHTON - The Peachtree Ridge girls track and field team tried to break into exclusive company Wednesday night, but the Collins Hill girls refused to let it happen.

Collins Hill won its eighth straight county championship with a late push, rallying past the upstart Lions by a narrow margin of 132-123. In the meet's long history, only Collins Hill, Parkview and Brookwood have won girls team championships.

And lately it's been just Collins Hill. But it took a big comeback this time.

"(A rally) had to be our plan because we were down again," Collins Hill coach Andrew Hudson said. "We've been in that situation numerous times over the years, but the difference was this time we were facing a team that had just about as much as we did on the track (for running events).

"But I'm proud of everyone. We had contributions all over and got tremendous efforts from everyone."

The boys meet wasn't quite so close.

Parkview repeated its boys county championship behind two wins and a meet record from senior Ethan Kasson, scoring 118.5 to oust rival and runner-up Brookwood's 90. The Panthers dominated the team competition on a night when four boys records were broken, including another by Grayson's Kirubel Erassa.

"The kids have been working hard the whole year since we started," Parkview coach Mark Whitley said. "They've kept a good attitude when we've turned up the pressure in practice and they've continued to work hard. I'm proud of them."

Collins Hill began cutting into Peachtree Ridge's lead - established during Monday's field events - with an exceptional show from Symone Glover.

Glover won the 100-meter dash in 12.51 seconds (Peachtree Ridge's Raven Parrish was disqualified in that race for a false start) and added a victory in the 200 with a time of 25.35, pulling away from runner-up Parrish (25.98). Her second win gave Collins Hill its first lead of the day over the Lions, 108-105.

The margin was closed greatly just before Glover's 200 when Amanda Winslow (2:15.10) and Nicky Akande (2:16.92) went 1-2 in the 800 for Collins Hill, picking up 18 team points.

The Eagles, who also won the 400 relay, were tied again at 113 when Peachtree Ridge's Monique Pate was second in the 300 hurdles. But Allyson McGinty's second-place run in the 3,200 pushed Collins Hill back in front for good.

The girls champs finished the meet off with a clinching win in the 1,600 relay.

Peachtree Ridge freshman Sonikqua Walters kept her team in it by winning the 400 in 56.70, narrowly missing the meet record.

Brookwood's Jasmine Billings was first in the 100 hurdles (15.12) and Central Gwinnett's Irrion Conaler won the 300 hurdles championship in 45.18. North Gwinnett also had a pair of championships, with Nicole Dimercurio's win in the 3,200 (11:01.99) and the Bulldogs' win the 3,200 relay.

In the boys meet, Kasson had a huge evening for Parkview.

The senior broke the meet record in the 400 (48.31), then added a second victory later in the evening in the 200. He won the third of four 200 heats in 22.26, then had to watch as that time held up against the eight runners in the final heat.

His efforts and his team's depth were plenty to keep the Panthers atop the team standings all evening.

Aleec Harris of Duluth also was a two-time champion, sweeping the hurdles titles. He won the 110 hurdles in 14.51 and the 300 hurdles in 38.84, narrowly missing long-standing county meet records in both races.

Brookwood broke the county meet record in the 3,200 relay at 8:16.54 while South won the 400 relay in a county meet record time of 42.07. The Comets also dominated the field for a win in the 1,600 relay with another meet record of 3:19.28.

Meadowcreek got a win in the 100 from Jalanni James, who beat a pack of runners in an ultra-tight finish with a time of 11.05. Grayson's Billy Kovalczyk took the county title in the 800 in 1:55.80, but his teammate Erassa was a star again.

The distance standout set his second county meet record - he broke the 1,600 mark on Monday - with a first-place finish in the 3,200. His time of 9:21.82 broke the record of 9:22.88, set in 1997 by South Gwinnett's Josh Crowfoot.
