LAWRENCEVILLE - Police believe alcohol and speed contributed to a wreck that killed three people early Saturday.
The crash occurred about 3:07 a.m. when a white 2001 Chevrolet Camaro crossed into the path of a BMW while the driver of the Camaro was trying to negotiate a curve on Collins Hill Road near Logan Way. Both cars spun out, with the BMW coming to a rest off the roadway, according to a press release from Gwinnett Police. The driver of the Camaro, Christopher B. Phillips, 23, of Sugar Hill, and his passenger, Brittany Hopkins, 26, of Sugar Hill, died at the scene, police said. Elmore Dudley III, 42, of Lawrenceville, who was the driver of a black 1992 BMW 935i, also died at the scene. His female passenger, who has not been identified, was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta for treatment of serious injuries. Police said she is expected to survive. With members of the Gwinnett County Police Accident Investigation Unit continuing to probe the accident, Cpl. Illana Spellman said, "it appears at this time that speed and alcohol were contributing factors in this accident." Toxicology results for both drivers are pending.More like this story
