Prep roundup: Eagles second at big national meet

RICHMOND, Va. - The Collins Hill girls and boys teams both finished second at the McDonald's Cross Country Festival, a huge national meet that features nearly 3,000 runners from across the nation, Saturday in Richmond, Va.

Amanda Winslow was runner-up in the high school girls race that included 24 teams from seven states. Her time of 18 minutes and 21 seconds led the nationally ranked Eagles to a second-place finish overall.

Also recording times for Collins Hill were Nicky Akande (fifth in 18:42), Vicky Winslow (seventh, 18:57), Briana Crawford (29th, 19:56) and Chloe Whitworth (33rd, 20:04).

The boys highest individual placers was Carlos Galindo - who was 20th in 16:46 - but the unranked Eagles had three of runners in the top 30 and claimed second overall. Only Jamestown (Va.) was better among a field that included 15 of the top 30 teams in the Southeast region.

Andy Gonzalez (25th, 16:54), Alex Kellams (27th, 16:58), Nganda Gatei (32nd, 17:08) and Joe Sokohl (56th, 17:30) were the other Collins Hill boys that had times counted toward the total.

Brookwood boys dominate Vols Invite

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The Brookwood boys won easily by scoring 31 points to Walton's runner-up 84 among a 16-team field Saturday the Volunteer Cross Country Invitational in Knoxville, Tenn.

Brookwood placed four runners in the top five of the race to seal the victory.

Tyler Anyan (second, 16:36), Doug Kalmbach (third, 16:47), Michael Sexton (fourth, 16:50) and Tommy George (fifth, 16:51) led the way for Brookwood. Also finishing for the Broncos were Carter Hewitt (18th), Zack Robinson (20th), and Alex Pena (26th).

Brookwood is currently ranked No. 1 in the Southeast region, according to dyestat.com.

VOLLEYBALL

GAC beats Brookwood, falls to Wesleyan

SUWANEE - Greater Atlanta Christian defeated Brookwood and was one point away from defeating Wesleyan before the defending champion Wolves rallied to win Saturday in the Gold Bracket of the Gwinnett County volleyball championships.

GAC beat Brookwood 25-22, 26-28, 25-15 and was up 25-20, 24-23 against Wesleyan. But the Wolves fought off match point, won Game 2 26-24 and Game 3 25-16.

Amanda Komisarow led the Spartan attack with 32 kills and five aces. Megan Rosburg added 23 kills and 24 digs. Catherine Chason had six kills and 10 digs while Brynn Massey racked up 60 assists on Saturday.
