DECATUR - Top ranked AA Buford took control of a defensive struggle to put away a determined Decatur team in the second half, 31-0, before some 2,000 fans at the Bulldogs' new downtown stadium Friday night.
The Wolves broke open the game in the third quarter on touchdown runs by Cody Getz from 7 yards out with 8:58 remaining and then a 54-yard burst from Storm Johnson only a minute later.
Buford had just held Decatur to three incomplete passes and a punt before Johnson's long run. Decatur was stymied all night by the Wolves' defense, which dominated the Bulldogs to minus-six yards total offense. Decatur's quarterback and punter, Trumon Jefferson provided the Bulldogs' only positive plays with several pass completions and was busy punting with eight for a 27-yard average.
The Wolves scored two more touchdowns in the fourth quarter as they wore down the smaller Decatur defense. Johnson provided the third touchdown by running 19 yards from scrimmage and then 38 yards for his second score on the next play. That run put Buford up 24-0 with just less than 4 minutes remaining in the game. Buford scored its final touchdown with only 49 seconds remaining when backup running back Tyler White scored from three yards out.
The first half was a defensive struggle and the heavily favored Wolves, plagued by penalties and miscues, did not register a first down until more than three minutes deep into the second quarter. At that point, they had been stifled by a quick and scrappy Decatur defense. Buford tried a 52-yard field goal from the powerful leg of Daniel Villafuerte in the first quarter but it fell short.
Buford finally got on the board when Villafuerte boomed a 40-yard field goal through with 3:33 left in the first half. The kick came after a drive that started from its own seven bogged down due to penalties at Decatur's 23. Buford was penalized 10 times for 86 yards for the night and that stalled the offense on several occasions. Buford also lost four fumbles in the game and that also had a slowing effect on the offense.
The Wolves consistently moved the football on offense with the running of Johnson and Getz and some crisp passing by Michael May. Johnson ended the game with 182 yards on only 11 carries and the two touchdowns. Getz, in addition to some good runs from scrimmage, had several long punt returns but his best effort was negated by a holding penalty.
